Chochinov, Pilloton, Docter

First I watched “It All Comes Together” with Allan Chochinov.  Chochinov talks about what design needs to solve next and he believes that design can help solve social issues.  He feels that there are boundaries that have been put up and that design can help break these boundaries and allow people to solve real issues.

Next I watched “Do More with Less” with Emily Pilloton.  She talks about how MacGyver inspired her to become a designer.  She argues that he had the most minimal resources but he created these elegant escapes because of it.  Less is more when it comes to creating a meaningful design.

Finally, I watched Peter Docter in “Storytime” and this one was by far my favorite.  Instead of a traditional sit down interview like the first two, we open up with him standing on his roof while ominous music plays in the background.  He talks about how design needs to incorporate story-telling into design with a beginning, middle and a resolution.  I can really relate to Docter since I am a big believer that story-telling is one of the best ways to convey your message.  Usually when I think of story-telling I think of books, movies, tv shows, etc. but not really design.  I think he’s right that design needs to incorporate more story-telling.
